Computer Systems Engineering Technology student Donald Collins

Computer Systems Engineering Technology student Donald Collins has been putting his skills to the test. Since starting at QCC in the fall of 2023, Donald has earned many impressive credentials that have strengthened his position in the field of Information Technology.

Donald’s interest in technology began at a very young age.

“I like to fix problems,” Donald recalled, describing his excitement of dismantling a radio as a child to see how it worked. “I’m fascinated by settings, menus and systems.”

This natural curiosity continued into entrepreneurship at age 18, when Donald launched his own tech support business. He offered software and hardware troubleshooting, virus removal and many other services that earned him the nickname ‘Computer Whiz’ in his hometown of Darliston, Westmoreland, Jamaica.

Currently providing deskside support for a financial firm, Donald has acquired certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Server+, Security+ and CySa+, and Microsoft Azure, Word and PowerPoint exams. The credentials have not only enhanced his workplace performance but also added to the foundation he has been building for his goal of working in large-scale cybersecurity.

He also earned several CompTIA stackable certifications, which recognize his hard work including CompTIA Security Analytics Professional, IT Operations Specialist, Secure Infrastructure Specialist and Network Infrastructure Professional designations. Donald actively encourages his peers to take advantage of the discount that QCC students receive on the cost of the exams.

“When students learn the material in our courses and get the certifications like Donald has done, their life possibilities become wide open,” said Professor of Computer Systems Engineering Technology Betty Lauer.

Lauer emphasized that IT credentials are essential for career advancement and salary growth. In the rapidly changing world of technology, Lauer said even seasoned professionals such as herself continue to pursue new credentials.

For Donald, his education isn’t just a career move, it’s part of his family values. Donald’s wife recently finished a liberal arts degree at Bunker Hill Community College. Together, they are raising three sons, all under 10 years old.

“I want to show my kids they can do it too,” Donald said.

As a fully online QCC student, Donald has worked hard to implement self-discipline and participates in life on campus through organizations such as the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He also developed strong relationships with his professors, which he said helps during challenging topics or assignments.

“Donald is a very diligent student. He is an excellent role model for other students,” said professional staff member Pat Garofoli, who noted that throughout the challenges of having a full-time job and a family to care for, Donald has remained positive in his pursuit of improving his life through higher education.

As Donald continues to build his expertise in cybersecurity while inspiring both his family and fellow students, he remains an example of the endless possibilities that arise when passion meets persistence.
