Director of Financial Aid Karen Grant

An essential part of QCC's goal of making higher education affordable and accessible is the Financial Aid Department, a dynamic team that helps transform educational dreams into reality. Director Karen Grant, who has been with the department since 2003, offered a glimpse into the complex world of financial assistance.

"To be successful as a financial aid professional, you need a real breadth of skills and knowledge. We work with so many different systems and rules at federal and state levels," Grant commented.

The Financial Aid Department is far more than just processing payments. The team navigates the intricacies of federal and state regulations, working closely with students and their families to ensure they can access education. From degree audits to grant management, each staff member brings specialized expertise to support students' unique journeys.

"I love problem solving, and we are constantly working to improve our processes and services for our students’ benefit," said Grant. "I make sure to find opportunities to interact with students throughout the year. Seeing them succeed and hearing their stories gives meaning to the work that we do."

A significant financial aid milestone came just prior to the start of the Fall 2023 semester, when the state created three new financial aid grant programs: MassGrant Plus Expansion, MassReconnect, and Community College Nursing Scholarships. The department successfully administered these programs to provide over 1,600 students with $3.6 million in free funding.

In addition, the state rolled out the exciting new MassEducate program this year which can cover the cost of tuition and fees for state residents who have never received a bachelor's degree. It is important for the community to know that students must fill out the FAFSA and will still receive a bill. They must also meet eligibility requirements set by the state (more information can be found at QCC.edu/free).

QCC's Financial Aid department has been encouraged by the investment in higher education that removes barriers and helps individuals improve themselves and their communities. Whatever comes next, they will remain committed to adaptability and support as students navigate the path to higher education.
