On October 21, Student Accessibility Services hosted over 50 guests comprised of high school and agency partners at their 18th annual breakfast, Mental Health Supports for Today’s College Student: Myths, Realities, and Student Voices. There were 11 high schools represented at the event, as well as attendees from Mass Rehabilitation Commission, MassEdCo, and the Federation for Children with Special Needs. QCC staff from Future Focus, Gateway to College, TRIO Student Support Services, Veteran Affairs, and Early College were also in attendance.
Tina Wells, director of Counseling and Wellness, described what counseling support looks like at the college, the number of students who access services and how students are referred for counseling services.
The student panel, comprised of current students Heather Lyons, Melanie Nguyen, and Chemlah MacNeil, shared their stories of coming to the college and accessing support through Student Accessibility Services, club involvement and community support through the Genesis Club. Each one shared their transition from high school to college and elaborated on the theme of mental health. Their perspectives and insights about college today were inspiring for the attendees to hear.
Breakfast attendees said they were happy to meet once again in person and network with colleagues. “Excellent presentation – all aspects provided helpful information regarding mental health and accessibility services post-high school,"said one area high school special educator.
The student panel presentation received positive feedback from most attendees:
“All was helpful! I especially enjoyed hearing from the students – their perspective and experience will help me when I share information with my high school students”.
Student Accessibility Services is appreciative of the breakfast event support from Facilities, Events Manager Vanessa Landyn, Dean of Compliance Liz Woods, Associate Vice President of Student Success Michelle Tufau-Afriyie, and the staff who attended the breakfast. We look forward to next year’s event.
