WORCESTER, MA— April 11, 2022 —Quinsigamond Community College will hold its 2022 Commencement Ceremony at the DCU Center in Worcester on Friday, May 20, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. This will be the first time QCC has held its commencement in-person since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020.
“For two years our students have endured the unimaginable, from losing loved ones, jobs, homes, becoming ill, struggling to make ends meet, and pivoting to remote learning in the span of only a few short weeks. They have stayed the course in their education and persevered through challenges in order to get where they are today,” said QCC President Luis G. Pedraja, Ph.D. “I’m thrilled to be able to greet them as they cross the stage at the DCU Center in May, on their way to a future that is brimming with promise.”
QCC’s 2022 Commencement Speaker will be Inspector General of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), Brian M. Tomney.
Mr. Tomney was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2022 and is the third Senate confirmed Inspector General for the FHFA. As Inspector General, he is the senior official responsible for independent audits, evaluations, investigations, and other oversight activities relating to FHFA’s programs and operations. The Office of Inspector General provides leadership in promoting economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in FHFA programs and preventing and detecting fraud, waste, and abuse.
Prior to serving as Inspector General, Mr. Tomney served as the Head of the Office of Corporate Investigations at Capital One and previously served as the Chief of Staff to the company’s Chief Compliance and Chief Ethics Officer and the Senior Vice President for Operational Risk and Oversight.
Mr. Tomney also served in a variety of roles within the U.S. Department of Justice that included Associate Deputy Attorney General, Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, Counsel for Rule of Law, and trial attorney in the Narcotic and Dangerous Drug Section of the Criminal Division.
A native of Massachusetts and long-time resident of Maine, Mr. Tomney’s public service career began in 1990 as a career paramedic/firefighter serving the City of Portland, Maine, until 2003. He received his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Maine School of Law, his Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, from the University of New England and his Associate Degree, Emergency Medical Technology/Technician (EMT Paramedic) from Southern Maine Community College. He is an active member of the Massachusetts and District of Columbia bars.
“We are honored to have Mr. Tomney as our first in-person commencement speaker in two years. As a community college graduate himself, he is a powerful example of where an associate degree can take a person,” President Pedraja said. “His career path is an inspiration for our graduates.”
